BREAKING BARRIERS: HOW PSILOCYBIN RESEARCH IS REVOLUTIONIZING MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Imagine if we stumbled upon a key that could unlock the doors to better mental health, alleviating the burden carried by millions of people worldwide. That’s the potential that psilocybin research holds. Psilocybin, the active compound found in “magic mushrooms,” is at the forefront of a mental health revolution, offering new hope and possibilities for those struggling with various mental health conditions.

The history of psilocybin research dates back to the mid-20th century when researchers first recognized its mind-altering properties. However, the war on drugs and stringent regulations led to a long hiatus in research. It’s only recently that the tides have begun to shift, with a resurgence in interest and scientific investigation.

The field of mental health care is once again on the cusp of a groundbreaking transformation, thanks to the resurgence of psilocybin research. Psilocybin, the active compound found in “magic mushrooms,” holds immense potential in treating various mental health conditions and unlocking the mysteries of the human mind, and society is coming to grips with what that could mean. Like the invention of the airplane, psilocybin research is poised to change the way we understand and approach mental health care. Only this time, neither ill-informed policy decisions nor a ‘’war on drugs’’ is on the cards.

Several high-profile clinical trials have demonstrated psilocybin’s efficacy in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In some cases, even just one or two psilocybin-assisted therapy sessions have led to profound, long-lasting improvements.

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY (JHU) – DEPRESSION TREATMENT (2020):

One notable study conducted at Johns Hopkins University in 2020 showed that psilocybin-assisted therapy resulted in significant and rapid reductions in depressive symptoms for participants with major depressive disorder. More than half of the participants experienced a remission of their depression after just one week, and the benefits were sustained for at least a month.

IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON – PSILOCYBIN VS. ESCITALOPRAM FOR DEPRESSION (2021):

Another compelling study from Imperial College London in 2021 compared the efficacy of psilocybin therapy with a conventional antidepressant, escitalopram, in treating moderate-to-severe major depressive disorder. The study demonstrated that psilocybin therapy was at least as effective as escitalopram, with some participants experiencing rapid and sustained improvement in their depressive symptoms.

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY (NYU) AND JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY – END-OF-LIFE ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION (2016):

Additionally, separate studies conducted by New York University and Johns Hopkins University in 2016 explored the use of psilocybin to alleviate anxiety and depression in patients with life-threatening cancer. Both studies found that a single dose of psilocybin produced significant and lasting improvements in anxiety, depression, and overall quality of life in a majority of the participants.

These trials are just a few examples of groundbreaking research being conducted in the field of psilocybin therapy, illustrating the potential of this compound for transforming mental health care.

Make no mistake – psilocybin research IS breaking down barriers and changing the way we perceive AND treat mental health conditions. Through the collective efforts of researchers, mental health professionals, and advocates, we’re embarking on a new frontier, unlocking doors to a brighter future for those in need. The profound impact of psilocybin research on both recreational and medical applications cannot be overstated, and the possibilities are truly endless.

WHICH MUSHROOM SPECIES NAMED AFTER PAUL STAMETS?

A novel magic mushroom species has been identified and dedicated to Paul Stamets, a renowned figure celebrated for cultivating a global love for fungi.

Psilocybe stametsii, a recently uncovered species, was initially spotted in Ecuador’s cloud forest and has been gathered on two occasions: first in 2011 by University of Utah’s Dr. Bryn Dentinger and a partner, followed by a 2022 collection by Giuliana Furci of the Fungi Foundation, who collaborated with the likes of author Robert Macfarlane and musician Cosmo Sheldrake.

This mushroom was found within the protected confines of the Los Cedros Biological Reserve, an area maintained under the Ecuadorian constitution’s Rights of Nature stipulations.

Giuliana Furci, who co-published the discovery using the Index Fungorum e-publishing tool hosted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, expressed immense joy in honoring Paul Stamets with the new mushroom species. She acknowledged his unmatched influence on the worldwide appreciation of fungi and his unwavering commitment to advancing mycology, which has inspired countless people for decades. We’ve written about Paul Stamets in the past, so for more details on his illustrious career and contributions to the fungus realm, check out our blog.

This marks the first occasion a species has been named after Stamets, rendering it particularly significant as the mushroom belongs to the Psilocybe genus. These fungi have ancient uses and are currently being employed and researched for therapeutic purposes in modern medicine due to their psilocybin production. Stamets has devoted a significant part of his career to studying these fungi, even publishing the book “Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World” in 1996.

In 1996, he named a newly discovered Psilocybe species after Dr. Andrew Weil (Psilocybe weilii), a distinguished figure in natural medicine, and in 1995, he identified another species called Psilocybe azurescens. Prior to these discoveries, Paul had written a collection of educational guides on cultivating both gourmet and medicinal mushrooms, which continue to serve as the definitive resources for mushroom cultivation.

Dr. Dentinger elaborates on the unique qualities of Psilocybe stametsii, mentioning that it seems to be an isolated species, observed just twice and on each occasion as a lone, unobtrusive mushroom no larger than a matchstick. It shares similarities with other magic mushrooms, displaying shades of brown and blending effortlessly into its surroundings of decaying leaves and soil. One distinguishing aspect is its sharp, pointed cap, which is also present in related species.

Another surprising discovery was that from a phylogenetic standpoint, it is most closely linked to an environmental DNA sequence in soil from China and stands apart evolutionarily from other recognized Psilocybe species found in Bolivia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

Interestingly enough, A mere 5-10% of global fungi have been identified, making the documentation of newfound species essential for creating a foundation for monitoring biodiversity and potentially offering new data sources that could positively impact both human and planetary health. Fungi, which are neither plants nor animals, are often overlooked in terms of importance; however, they are intricate organisms that constitute their own distinct kingdom.

5-STEP GUIDE TO RESPONSIBLE PSYCHEDELIC USE

Psychedelics have the potential to be powerful tools for personal growth and healing, but it’s important to approach them with caution and respect. Responsible psychedelic use involves taking steps to minimize the potential risks and maximize the potential benefits of the experience. This includes carefully considering factors such as the setting and mindset in which the psychedelic is consumed, properly dosing to avoid dangerous or uncomfortable experiences, and taking time to integrate the insights gained during the experience into everyday life.

Here are some useful considerations to take into account:

1. WHAT IS YOUR REASON BEHIND TAKING PSYCHEDELICS?

While the effects of classic psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin, and DMT may seem like the answer to life’s complexities, it’s important to acknowledge that they are not a panacea for mental health issues or life’s imperfections. These substances work by binding to serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptors in the brain’s cerebral cortex, which can make everything seem incredibly meaningful. However, it’s essential to consider whether these medicines are appropriate for your situation and mental wellbeing, and whether you are seeking transformation and transcendence or simply chasing “special experiences” for recreational use.

It’s important to evaluate whether you are using psychedelics as a band-aid to avoid confronting a painful problem, or if your expectations are realistic. Furthermore, it’s worth exploring other methods of altering your consciousness that may be gentler, such as holotropic breathwork, mindfulness, yoga, lucid dreaming, and microdosing. While moderate or major doses of hallucinogens may lead to transformative experiences, research suggests that mystical experiences are often the key to breakthroughs for people with issues such as drug abuse and alcoholism.

Ultimately, while psychedelics can be a powerful tool for personal growth and healing, responsible use requires an honest and introspective approach to the decision to consume these substances, as well as a deep respect for their effects. It’s important to be mindful of the potential risks and to consider other approaches that may be better suited to one’s individual needs and goals.

2. TRUST YOUR PSYCHEDELIC SOURCE AND TEST YOUR PRODUCT

It’s important to know what psychoactive substances you are consuming and their effects to reduce harm. Education is the first step on the road to harm reduction. To learn more about all the major psychedelics, it is important to use several trusted online sources such as Third Wave, or look into experience reports by other psychonauts on places such as Erowid. By learning from others’ experiences you can gain an insight into the process and avoid any potential pitfalls

Due to legal prohibition, the purity of illicit drugs can vary greatly, and many substances are cut with harmful additives. According to the Aware Project, Southern California’s Psychedelic Society: “Nearly 100% of substances are cut with one or more adulterants, and it’s not just baking soda anymore.” It’s crucial to ensure that you know what you’re consuming, and that you’re not putting yourself in harm’s way by taking something you’re not familiar with.

Lastly, mental health is serious, and should be taken seriously at all times. Anyone with suspected or diagnosed mental health conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder should consult with a trained professional before using any psychedelic substances or plant medicines. These substances can have unpredictable effects and can exacerbate existing mental health issues. It’s important to seek guidance from a qualified expert to ensure that you’re using these substances safely and responsibly.

4. START WITH A LOW DOSE AND DETERMINE YOUR OPTIMAL DOSAGE

To use psychedelics safely and effectively, it’s important to start with a low dose and determine your optimal dosage. Albert Hofmann, the creator of LSD, emphasized the importance of careful experimentation to find the right dose for an individual. Taking too much of a substance can lead to a “bad trip” and ego dissolution, which can be frightening.

It’s important to research the substance and be patient before taking a second dose. The dose and mode of administration also play a role in the experience. Moreover, the effects of some psychedelics, such as DMT come on very quickly whereas others, such as psilocybin, take their time. So, before anything else, be sure to do your research and be patient before taking that second dose.

A diary or calendar is a great way to help keep oversight of your intentions and goals, and to avoid habitual use that can lead to psychological and chemical dependence. Scheduling daily, weekly, monthly, and annual practices can help integrate the experience into everyday life.

Lastly, it’s important to take a complete break from psychedelic use and assess any potential dependencies or negative consequences.

4. FIND THE RIGHT GUIDES FOR PSYCHEDELIC SUPPORT

Nowadays, there is an endless amount of support for those interested in psychedelics: support groups, guidelines, books, coaches, therapists, etc. Furthermore, there is a plethora of psychedelic societies which provide safe spaces open to discussion, education and responsible use. Most of them can be found in this link or through the Psychedelic Experience directory.

Other websites like Tripsafe offer research-backed free educational resources to promote responsible use of psilocybin mushrooms and LSD including advice for guides. Additionally websites such as TripSit provide 24/7 live support to assist anyone who is going through tough experiences.

5. INTEGRATE YOUR PSYCHEDELIC EXPERIENCE FINDINGS INTO YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

To truly benefit from psychedelic experiences, it’s important to integrate the lessons learned into your daily life. Without doing so, these experiences may only be temporary and lack long-term value. Although it may be tempting to continually seek new experiences, it’s important to realise that it may prevent spiritual and psychological growth from occurring.

For those seeking healing from anxiety, trauma, addiction, or depression, psychedelic therapy may be a viable option. To begin exploring this avenue, a good starting point is Third Wave’s guide to psychedelic therapists. With psychedelic psychotherapy, fostering healthy cognitive and behavioural habits is crucial for long-term success. While substances such as LSD and psilocybin can help restore openness and flexibility, these traits must be actively nurtured to prevent falling back into old, ingrained habits.

Psychedelics can be a helpful tool for healing when used wisely. They can help people explore difficult emotions and gain new perspectives, leading to positive changes in behaviour and attitudes. Research has shown their effectiveness in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, addiction, and PTSD. However, it’s important to use these substances only with a trained professional or in a safe and comfortable environment.

EFFECTS OF MICRODOSING PSYCHEDELICS ON CREATIVITY: A SCIENTIFIC STUDY

*The following article is based on research carried out by the University of Leiden, by Luisa ProchazkovaDominique P. LippeltLorenza S. ColzatoMartin KucharZsuzsika Sjoerds & Bernhard Hommel

News organizations worldwide are covering the trend of professionals utilizing small quantities of psychedelics such as magic mushrooms, truffles, or peyote to enhance creativity and productivity in the workplace. With more people microdosing, it is only normal that more and more research comes to light on the topic.

Let’s dive right into this research paper and examine what the study is all about!

A bit of background

During the 1960s, psychedelics were used extensively for experimental research, clinical settings, creative and scientific vocations, and recreationally. However, due to the growing counterculture movement of the 1960s and the failure to establish the efficiency of LSD treatment, most countries around the world made psychedelics illegal.

Fast forward several decades of disregard and psychedelics have emerged as a legitimate and promising research area within the fields of clinical/experimental psychology. Certain countries, like The Netherlands, have even legalized the status of psychedelic truffles, which has offered many researchers a chance to move from qualitative studies to a quantitative approach. The qualitative approach has given us a lot of reports of its effects, but these are very subjective as each individual’s brain mechanism and experience varies.

According to research carried out throughout the 21st century, psychedelic substances are thought to affect the serotonergic system, which may be advantageous in situations requiring mental flexibility and the ability to break away from rigid thought patterns. If future research demonstrates the positive effects of microdosing on the brain and cognition, it could emerge as a desirable alternative due to its subtler nature, potentially avoiding the perceptual distortions often associated with moderate or high doses.

However, although a lot of research points to it being beneficial it is still difficult to assess if it really improves creativity, as creativity is a multilayered phenomenon (it has many different aspects and is difficult to define in simple terms). Moreover, tracing creativity is further complicated as it can be separated into convergent thinking and divergent thinking:

  • Convergent thinking → identifying one solution to a well-defined problem
  • Divergent thinking → identifying as many possible solutions to a loosely defined problem

Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that all creative tasks require a degree of both types of thinking to be integrated in the process.

The actual study

Well, what makes this study different from others is that they are currently the first ones to conduct a scientific study to investigate the potential cognitive benefits of microdosing on humans in a natural setting. This unique opportunity to carry out quantitative research outside of a lab arose during the events of the Psychedelic Society of The Netherlands.

The study aimed to examine the impact of psychedelic truffles on creative thinking. To achieve this, convergent and divergent thinking was tested using three tests: Picture Concept Task, the Alternate Uses Task, and the Raven’s Progressive Matrices task. Each test was used to assess specific cognitive abilities as follows:

  • Picture Concept Task: evaluates cognitive abilities such as problem-solving, reasoning, and the ability to identify patterns and relationships between visual stimuli. Participants are shown a series of related pictures and asked to identify the common theme or concept linking them together.
  • Alternate Uses Task: measures creativity by asking individuals to come up with as many different and innovative uses for a common object as possible. It evaluates the individual’s ability to generate ideas, their flexibility in thinking, and the uniqueness of their ideas. This test is often used in psychology and creativity research and also in educational and occupational settings to assess creative potential.
  • Raven’s Progressive Matrices task: A nonverbal intelligence test that measures an individual’s ability to solve problems without relying on language or cultural knowledge. It involves selecting the missing piece from a series of geometric patterns and evaluating cognitive abilities such as spatial reasoning, pattern recognition, and analytical thinking.

Participants in the study ingested an average of 0.37 grams of dried psychedelic truffles, and the second session was conducted 1.5 hours after consumption when the truffles’ effects are expected to peak. During this session, participants were asked to repeat the tasks performed in the baseline session.

The peak effects of truffles are known to occur between 30-90 minutes after ingestion, followed by a few hours of peak effects, hence the 1.5-hour wait.

The Results

The study found that a microdose of psychedelic truffles led to a significant increase in divergent idea generation, as measured by the Alternate Uses Task (AUT). The participants showed higher scores in fluency, flexibility, and originality, along with an increase in convergent thinking on the Picture Concept Task (PCT).

While there was no change in fluid intelligence scores between the two measurement time-points, the results suggest that microdosing may improve creativity performance without affecting general analytic cognition.

These findings are in line with earlier research, carried out by the likes of James Fadiman, that has demonstrated positive effects of high doses of psychedelics on creative performance.

Limitations of the study

The study has several limitations due to the use of a quasi-experimental design and the absence of a control group. The quasi-experimental design did not allow for randomization of participants or experimental conditions, which could have resulted in potential biases and confounds.

Additionally, the experiment was conducted in a natural setting, which provided a more ecologically valid environment but limited the control over extraneous variables. The absence of a placebo condition prevented the ability to differentiate the effects of the administered substance from those of the placebo effect or expectancy effects.

While the researchers argued that the possibility of learning effects was unlikely, they were unable to quantify their influence on the results. The absence of a control group and randomization of the substance also limited the generalizability of the findings.

Furthermore, the mood could have contributed to the observed effects on the divergent thinking task, as a positive mood has been shown to enhance creativity. Therefore, future studies should consider the potential influence of these limitations when interpreting the results of similar experiments.

Conclusions

The study suggests that microdoses of psychedelic substances could be a promising alternative to large doses, which can result in undesirable side effects. Microdosing may eliminate the risks of challenging experiences while maintaining the potential benefits of psychedelics on human emotion and cognition.

The naturalistic study is the first to show quantitatively that microdosing psychedelics could enhance creative performance. This effect may be due to inducing a state of unconstrained thought that allows for increased novel idea generation. The researchers hope that their findings will encourage further research into the potential beneficial effects of microdosing psychedelics.

Apart from its potential benefits as a cognitive enhancement technique, microdosing could be investigated further for its therapeutic efficacy in slowing down cognitive decline or helping individuals who suffer from rigid thought patterns or behaviour, such as those with depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder.

WILL VERMONT LEGALIZE PSYCHEDELICS & DECRIMINALIZE ALL DRUGS?

The legalisation of psychedelics, such as magic mushrooms, seems to be a hot topic in various places around the world. With Oregon legalizing the use of psilocybin for medical treatment and therapeutic purposes, it’s not going to be long before more US states follow suit.

Recently, lawmakers in Vermont have proposed several drug reforms which are set to change the course of psychedelics in the state.

Amongst these proposals are one to decriminalise the possession of any drug, one to eliminate any criminal sanctions for the use or sale of psilocybin and a final one to decriminalise psychedelic fungi.

Vermont’s current approach to charging individuals for simple drug possession with a misdemeanour or low-level felony would be replaced under the proposed legislation. Possession of “a personal use supply of drugs” would instead be considered a civil offence, resulting in a $50 fine. However, individuals could avoid paying this penalty by participating in a substance use disorder screening.

On top of this, the new legislation would seal the criminal history records of prior convictions for possession of less than the newly established personal use amounts. These personal use amounts are set to be recommended by 2025 and they are determined by the Drugs Use Standards Advisory Board

According to the new bill, the proposed legislation includes a provision to establish a pilot programme that permits individuals to test their drugs. Providing access to drug-checking services without the risk of arrest or prosecution would “reduce the risk of accidental death and hospitalizations,” as well as enable real-time tracking of drug trends.

This is a step forward as the negative effects of criminalising drug use have been felt heavily by individuals and communities, with people of colour bearing a disproportionate burden. Studies have indicated that black individuals were 14 times more likely than their white counterparts to be defendants in a felony drug case in Vermont.

Groups like Decriminalize Vermont, are large advocates and in favour of this new bill as it would help combat substance abuse and improve measures to prevent overdose amongst communities. In addition to this, a survey by advocates found that 84% of Vermont voters supported replacing criminal penalties for simple drug possession with civil fines and allocating resources for treatment and harm reduction.

That being said, there are still many obstacles to overcome in order to make this decision final. Vermont governor, Phil Scott, is heavily opposed against loosening restrictions on psychedelics and other drugs making it very difficult for progress to happen. Nonetheless, individuals and specialised groups in Vermont will continue to fight for the advancement of psilocybin and decriminalisation laws in the state.

THREE BOOKS ABOUT PSYCHEDELICS THAT YOU MUST READ!

Looking for a book to read about psychedelics can sometimes be quite daunting due to the vast amount of options available. Here are three books that we recommend, written by some of the leading experts and supporters of this field.

THE PSYCHEDELIC EXPLORERS GUIDE BY JAMES FADIMAN

This book by James Fadiman explores the safe and responsible use of psychedelic substances for therapeutic and personal growth purposes. Fadiman, a respected researcher and expert in the field, presents a comprehensive guide for people who are interested in exploring the use of psychedelics, such as LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, and MDMA, as tools for personal and spiritual development.

The book covers topics such as how to prepare for a psychedelic experience, how to navigate the psychedelic journey, and how to integrate the insights gained from the experience into one’s daily life. It also provides information on the history of psychedelic use, the risks and benefits of different substances, and the legal and ethical issues surrounding their use.

Fadiman draws on his extensive experience working with people who have used psychedelics and his own personal experiences to offer practical advice and insights. The book emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for psychedelic experiences, as well as the need for responsible and informed use.

Overall, this book is a valuable read, and resource, for anyone interested in exploring the therapeutic and spiritual potential of psychedelic substances in a safe and responsible way.

Go give this a read

GUIDE FOODS OF THE GODS BY TERRENCE MCKENNA

This book by Terence McKenna explores the relationship between plants, psychoactive substances, and human evolution. The book presents a wide-ranging exploration of the role that psychoactive substances, such as psilocybin mushrooms and ayahuasca, have played in human history, from prehistoric times to the present day.

McKenna argues that the use of psychoactive plants has been a fundamental part of human evolution, shaping our consciousness and our culture. He explores the history of the use of these substances in different cultures around the world, as well as their role in religious and spiritual practices.

The book also delves into the political and social implications of drug use and prohibition, arguing that the criminalization of psychoactive substances has been a disastrous and counterproductive policy. McKenna makes a case for a more enlightened and compassionate approach to drug policy, one that recognizes the positive potential of these substances when used responsibly and with respect.

This thought-provoking and informative exploration of the relationship between psychoactive substances, human consciousness, and cultural evolution is an incredible read. It challenges conventional wisdom and presents a compelling case for a more nuanced and compassionate approach to drug policies. Check it out here

THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION BY ALDOUS HUXLEY

In this book, Aldous Huxley recounts his experiences taking mescaline, a psychoactive substance found in certain cacti. In the book, Huxley describes the profound changes in perception and consciousness that he experienced under the influence of the drug.

Huxley’s account of his mescaline experience is framed within a broader discussion of the nature of consciousness and the limitations of our normal waking consciousness. He argues that our habitual ways of perceiving the world are limited and that psychoactive substances like mescaline can expand our consciousness and reveal new dimensions of reality.

Throughout the book, Huxley draws on insights from various spiritual traditions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, to explore the nature of consciousness and the potential for personal transformation. He also critiques the materialistic worldview of modern Western society, arguing that it has led to a profound alienation from nature and from our own inner selves.

Take a dive into the thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the nature of consciousness and the potential for personal transformation. The book’s influence has been far-reaching, and it is widely regarded as a classic work of psychedelic literature.

There are many more books available and preferences vary per individual, but these three are a must for those looking to explore their psychedelic journey, and understand this fascinating alternate world that is so powerful.

PSILOCYBIN THERAPY TRAINING PROGRAMME HAS ITS FIRST GRADUATES.

Several recent studies suggest that psilocybin has promising results for individuals suffering from mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety. These new findings, accompanied by Oregon’s Ballot Measure 109, the state of Oregon decided to legalize the adult use of Psilocybin in a controlled environment and under the supervision of professionals.

In order to become a fully qualified supervisor, over 100 Oregonians had to complete a rigorous psilocybin training program set up by InnerTrek and Oregon’s Health Authority and Department of Education. This program consists of 120 hours of core training to learn the theory of psilocybin therapy, accompanied by 40 hours of supervised practice which is essentially hands-on learning.

Upon finishing these 160 hours of training, every graduate was required to take two final examinations before becoming an official psilocybin therapy facilitator – one final exam supervised by InnerTrek, and the other an examination conducted by the Oregon Health Authority.

Once students passed both exams they were able to administer treatments with the use of psilocybin.

Although this news is great, there are many people who seem to think that psilocybin treatments are all about tripping and getting lost in the psychedelic experience, however this is far from true. According to graduate Kathryn Kloos, the whole experience is about healing individuals suffering from PTSD, anxiety and depression (especially true for war veterans).

Furthermore, the general director of the InnerTrek program, Tom Eckert, is incredibly certain that offering effective and alternative solutions like psilocybin is a great step forward toward the future of mental health treatment. It’s a new, and tested, way for humans to reflect upon their feelings and remove the blocks that are affecting them negatively.

Despite psilocybin treatment being a fairly new topic within the scientific and medical field, historical evidence shows that they have been used for centuries by cultures such as the Mayas and Aztecs for rituals as well as medicine. It is very intriguing that thousands of years ago psilocybin was such a huge part of certain civilizations, and that now it is reemerging as a potential solution to helping with mental health disorders.

The next decade is going to bring us a lot more studies and research on the topic of psilocybin and we are extremely excited to see how this shapes over time! If you wish to learn more about this incredible initiative by InnerTrek and the state of Oregon, you can visit their official website

HOW CAN MICRODOSING BOOST CREATIVITY?

A recent scientific study investigated the effects of microdosing psychedelics on creativity and yielded some genuinely interesting discoveries we have to discuss. The study looked into various mental health and well-being factors of those who microdose vs non-microdosers, revealing that microdosers demonstrated elevated scores on measures of wisdom and creativity

Tiny doses = No hallucinations

The practice of microdosing consists of taking incredibly low doses of psychedelics. In the case of magic mushrooms, all that is needed is 0.1 – 0.3 grams of dried mushrooms in order for it to have an effect on you. This process will not direct you into a whirlwind of hallucinations, but rather subtle changes in perception and behavior. In other words, you could microdose and still go on with your day-to-day activities such as working.

In recent years, microdosing to improve oneself and personal mental health has gained a lot of popularity. Regardless of the limited published scientific research on its positive effects, there are several articles discussing young professionals microdosing in work environments in order to improve creativity – namely in Silicon Valley

Do they really have higher wisdom and creativity?

There is no actual experimental studies that back it up fully, but PhD students Thomas Anderson and Rotem Petranker, have carried out their own experiment where they recruited participants online, mainly from Reddit’s microdosing community. Data was gathered on microdosing patterns by asking participants to fill out questionnaires, which were then openly shared for Open Science.

The results showed that microdosers scored higher on measures of “wisdom”, which in the context of the study means that they had the ability to consider multiple perspectives, learn from mistakes, tune in with emotions and feel a sense of connection.

Furthermore, microdosers were discovered to be more creative and open-minded than their counterparts, demonstrating a higher capacity for divergent thinking. In this particular study, creativity was measured through a task in which participants were asked to come up with unconventional uses for ordinary household items.

Although the study shows promising results, it’s important to take into account that nobody knows whether it’s the microdosing that caused these differences or if it’s another factor. We can be certain that here is certainly room for more studies and research to look into this topic.

Is there a new future ahead for psychedelics?

There is certainly an exciting future ahead for the use of psychedelics for medical treatment and clinical trials, but we are still not near mass adoption of this idea or concept. Although there are many positive accounts of microdosing, there are still studies where people report downsides to it, namely increased anxiety or aches.

One of the large issues regarding psychedelics is that they are considered illegal in the majority of the world with the exceptions of some states or countries. It is always good to double-check what the laws are surrounding psychoactive substances where you reside before indulging.

Overall, it’s clear that this field is in need of more controlled lab experiments, mainly randomized placebo trials, in order to ensure test safety, reliability and efficacy. Hopefully, the study of microdosing will continue to evolve and be used for research in the subject of clinical science.
